The City of Commerce City seeks a dedicated, experienced Stormwater Coordinator to join our Public Works Department. This full-time, exempt position is crucial in ensuring the City's compliance with stormwater management regulations and protecting our valuable water resources.
What You'll Do
As our Stormwater Coordinator, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing the City's comprehensive stormwater management program. Your responsibilities will include:
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the City meets all Colorado Discharge Permit System (CDPS) requirements and the Phase II MS4 permit.
- Program Management: Manage and update the City's Stormwater Management Program, including the Position Description Document (PDD) and Municipal Operations Runoff Control Plan.
- Inspections and Enforcement: Conduct field inspections of construction sites, ponds, and stormwater management plans to ensure compliance with regulations. Issue notices and stop work orders as needed.
- Plan Review: Review erosion and sediment control plans for new construction projects and ensure long-term operation and maintenance of permanent BMPs.
- Public Outreach: Educate residents about stormwater pollution prevention and respond to citizen inquiries.
- Collaboration: Work closely with internal departments, external agencies, developers, and contractors to ensure compliance and promote best practices.
- Technical Expertise: Stay informed about current stormwater management regulations, best practices, and emerging technologies.
Who You Are
- Experienced Professional: You have at least three years of experience in stormwater management, environmental management, or a related field. You possess a strong understanding of water quality principles, environmental regulations, and construction practices.
- Technical Expert: You are knowledgeable about federal and state stormwater regulatory requirements and deeply understand stormwater and water quality issues.
- Effective Communicator: You can clearly and concisely communicate technical information to various audiences, including engineers, contractors, city officials, and the public.
- Problem Solver: You can identify and analyze complex stormwater management challenges and develop practical solutions.
- Team Player: You enjoy collaborating with others and can build strong relationships with stakeholders.

Hiring salary is dependent upon experience. The hiring range is $70,178.40 - $77,976/year.

Please review the full job description here!Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or closely related field and at least three years of stormwater management, environmental management, or closely related experience are required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. APWA Certified Stormwater Manager is preferred. Municipal experience preferred. Erosion control certifications or classes are highly desirable or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. Current NIMS/ICS training through IS 100 and IS 200 or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire. Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Expert knowledge of the principles and practices of water quality and environmental regulations relating to stormwater and water quality issues
- Expert knowledge of federal and state stormwater regulatory requirements
- Strong knowledge of construction, engineering, and environmental science terminology
- Knowledge of computer analysis techniques

- Strong mathematical skills to perform calculations and estimations
- Strong computer skills with a thorough knowledge of Cartegraph and Microsoft Office applications
- Strong problem solving skills
- Ability to assist others in understanding and meeting established standards
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineering and construction professionals, coworkers, and the public
- Ability to acquire and apply new skills to projects and work assignments.
- Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to make decisions in the best interest of the City
